Undergraduate Thesis - Feasibility of Rainwater Harvesting in Paarden Island
It is very important to know how much of the rainwater will be used over a certain period. The calculations of how much water is used within a month will help to calculate what the storage requirements are for a certain erf.
The amount of water that is used can be calculated by reading the monthly water bill (Krishna, 2005) and then subtracting any water usages that will not require the use of rainwater. Another method would be to calculate the water requirement of each individual water mechanism or process and summing these values.
The required amounts of water that require different levels of treatment should also be established so that the size of each treatment process can be determined. In other words the use of rainwater for non-potable uses would not have to undergo the same treatment as what potable water would. Thus the treatment required for the potable water will be for a much lower volume, which would help to save on the cost of treatment.
